• Please note that the SMEX AO document posted above ("Small Explorer (SMEX) and Missions of Opportunity.PDF") will not be edited to reflect any amendments or clarifications. Interested parties must also retrieve any and all Amendment and/or Clarification documents as may be posted separately above in order to have a complete representation of the final AO.
• On November 27, 2007, NASA released Amendment 2 to the SMEX AO. Amendment 2, Investigations on the International Space Station, provides an opportunity for investigators to propose Mission of Opportunity investigations for NASA-sponsored investigations on the International Space Station that can be delivered by the HTV cargo vehicle. Notices of Intent are requested by December 11, 2007 and proposals are due February 12, 2008. There are separate, SMEX-ISS NOI and proposal cover pages. Proposers are advised to use caution and ensure that they submit to the correct place.
• On October 22, 2007, NASA released Amendment 1 to the SMEX AO. Amendment 1, Focused Opportunity for the Solar Orbiter (FOSO), describes a proposal opportunity for investigations that include the provision of instruments or sensors for the European Space Agency (ESA) led Solar Orbiter mission. FOSO proposers should be aware of the following. (i) In general, the requirements for FOSO proposals are the same as the requirements described in the SMEX AO for Mission of Opportunity proposals. However FOSO proposals must conform to scientific, technical, cost, and management requirements that are specific to the Solar Orbiter opportunity. Therefore FOSO proposers must read the SMEX AO in addition to Amendment 1 in order to prepare a compliant FOSO proposal. (ii) The due date for FOSO proposals is February 1, 2008, which is later than the due date for non-FOSO SMEX proposals. (iii) There is a separate, FOSO-specific NOI page and a FOSO-specific proposal cover page for FOSO proposers. All proposers should take care to use the correct NOI and proposal cover pages.
• The opportunity to proposers to full mission SMEX opportunities to submit to NASA Table B7 for PI experience pre-screening has closed. No further opportunities for pre-screening are available. Proposers are reminded that Table B7 must be included within the submitted proposal document, in accordance with instructions in Section 7.1.7 of the SMEX AO.
